Sport is, and will continue to be, a fixture in the Spanish consumer's shopping basket. The online sale of this type of item has increased compared to 2020 and is consolidated as one of the pillars of sports companies. In terms of spending throughout this year and that planned for the following year, sport is positioned as one of the 10 main categories for consumers.

This follows from the Cetelem Observatory report for ecommerce in 2021, in which sport appears in the ninth category of the list of products and/or services that Spaniards have acquired throughout 2021. This classification is led by fashion , leisure, footwear and accessories and beauty. In total, 49% of those surveyed claim to have bought a sports product online, which means a small drop compared to 2020, when the figure rose to 51%.

With regard to purchase forecasts for next year, the purchase of sports equipment will also be one of the most repeated options among Spanish buyers. This sector will be the tenth option among those chosen for the next 12 months for 44% of those surveyed. It is a percentage that remains stable compared to last year's survey. By 2022, leisure, fashion and travel will be the main categories in the ranking of products and services that Spaniards intend to purchase or hire.

The consumption and distribution analysis observatory has obtained other conclusions in this report. On the one hand, the total average spending on purchases has increased by 11% compared to last year. Which means a total of 2,336 euros. Rest, gaming and training are the three categories that have experienced the greatest increase.

On the other hand, the Cetelem report shows data regarding the use of mobile phones or tablets to make purchases. The so-called mobile commerce has also been the most used for fashion, leisure and footwear and accessories.

What is clear is that ecommerce is increasingly important for sports purchases. According to the Ecommerce 2020 report, also carried out by the Cetelem Observatory, in 2020, after the arrival of the pandemic, more than half of consumers bought sports items online, ten points more than in 2019.
