The musician Miguel Ángel Julián, the first and only Spaniard to have recorded with the legendary producer Willie Mitchell, discoverer of Al Green and producer of great myths of black music such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley or Rod Stewart, lands at the Principal de Palencia, on November 27, with his 'Soul & LoveTour'. Who is 'Soul Teller'?

It is a very basic project around my way of life, which is to tell stories from the soul. Nowadays, everything comes more from the intelligence than from the warmth and the soul. Music, clothing, design or architecture go on a throwaway plan, leaving the next generations soulless melodies and trends. 'Soul Teller' intends to do its bit and do things from the soul.

More than 'soul', what conjugates?

People read 'soul' and think it's all about soul music. Undoubtedly, I sink my feet into black music, along with 'soul', 'rhythm and blues', 'rock and roll'. The project that is going to be presented in Palencia will be a 'rock and soul' band, so that people can see both styles and be able to interact with them.

Where is it born from?

As a musician I start at the age of 14, but I had no idea what this project by 'Soul Teller', the storyteller of the soul, meant at the time. A melody came to me, I gave it that title and, over the years, I have realized what it meant. From there a first band was assembled, which were the 'Cool Jerks', with ten years touring Spain and Europe.

Comings and goings. What are your musical stages?

After the stage with 'Cool Jerks', I went to the United Kingdom, being my habitual residence, where I got in touch with the producer Willie Mitchell, who liked the songs, because he told me that, if it were not like this, I was not going to go there, no matter how much money I put in. He opened the door for me and we were on tour. After that, we recorded again, this time with Lawrence 'Boo' Mitchell, son of the legendary Willie Mitchell.

How do you define your music?

It is a cocktail of black and white music, to place a genre and a label. In short, they are songs. I look for the heart of a good song. Producer Willie Mitchell taught me that nothing is black or white and nothing is to be brag about. All of this is rooted in people coming together to make music, hand in hand with songs with simple melodies that speak of everyday life. They are songs from the soul to connect.

Connection between the United Kingdom and Spain. Are there differences in the musical field?

Spain is a country that has a lot to offer, but it doesn't know how to sell it and that we have wonders at all levels. As a country, we are one of the best to live in, because when you are away you realize it. It is not that we are behind, but asleep compared to the Anglo-Saxon countries in the field of entertainment, because they know how to sell it. We have a roof over our heads and they don't let us put other music and other languages ​​on the radio and we keep looking at our navels. It is necessary to bring groups that sing in the languages ​​with which the big leagues are played, just as the German, French or Italian send their bands.

I play anywhere. I am a human being who approaches each town and city, because it is always good to carry a melody from the heart. What's the secret to your musical dates?

The important thing is to put on a good show so that the public doesn't want to leave, with simple songs that make people move to join us. What will be seen will include the first, the second and the third stage, with a band presentation with everything that has been carried out during the summer, despite the restrictions. Since they are no longer active now, I run a whole band under the name 'Soul Teller'.

You can learn from everyone, because they are great international figures. The first thing is an honor, since they are fantastic. On a personal level, they are human beings like everyone else, some already deceased. They have taught me a lot of things, like humility. In the end, all this is a profession and going on stage. One has to be a musician and other journalists. You have to interact with each other as if it were a gear.

First and only Spaniard to have recorded with legendary producer Willie Mitchell. Qualitative leap?

Willie Mitchell taught me that less is more. We went to Memphis (USA) with the approach and the roll of Spain in which they always asked the reason why he sang and sang in English. I feel that this genre has to be sung in English, I don't feel it in Spanish. I arrived with a point of inferiority for not knowing if I sang it well or if I was white to sing 'soul'. Mitchell told me that less is more. Give your best and don't brag about anything. It was the greatest teaching. Soul is not black, white or blue, because we are human beings making music. In the end, it is labels and nonsense that people invent that end up sinking the profession.

Now what?

I live in the present. I work with 'single', because I prefer to put out a 'single' and its respective video and not records, because everyone wants them for yesterday and tomorrow you have to put out another one.
