These shoppers are often work-at-home parents, retirees, teachers, and other professionals who help companies monitor everything from product quality to cleanliness and friendly service. They provide opinions and evaluate the work of employees for companies in all types of industries. They work full time or part time, and receive up to $25 per hour or more.

"Mystery shoppers are the guardians of brands," says Martin Lindstrom, author of Buyology: The Truth and Lies About Why We Buy. "They provide immediate information from the consumer's perspective. An observation, however insignificant it may be to the mystery shopper, can lead to a complete shake-up of a product's strategy and inventory of one of the top companies on the magazine's list."
