Omicron, the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 detected for the first time in South Africa, once again puts the world on alert.
One of the first countries that has decided to take measures to mitigate the risks that this variant of the virus may cause is Japan. Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of the country, announced that as of Tuesday, November 30, the borders will be closed to prevent the access of new foreign residents such as foreign students, interns or business trips.

“Faced with a possible worsening of the situation, we have decided to prohibit new entries from all countries in the world as a preventive and urgent measure,” explains the president in a statement. Japan had already closed its borders for the arrival of tourists since the first phase of the pandemic, but in recent months it had granted different visas for foreign students and workers.
Although the country has not yet registered any contagion of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant, it is analyzing a positive case of a citizen from Namibia, who could be an omicron carrier.
Measures are also being taken in the United States to contain omicron. New York declared this weekend a state of emergency after the appearance of the new variant of the coronavirus. Kathy Hochul, governor of this state, launched an executive order that will limit non-essential procedures in hospitals and expand their capacity. For his part, President Joe Biden also announced that as of November 29, travel from eight countries in southern Africa will be prohibited.
In Europe, several cases of omicron have been detected in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark. Although no case has yet been reported in Spain, all those travelers from high-risk areas (seven African countries) will have to present negative tests to be able to enter the country even if they are vaccinated.
