You should avoid a style that is too informal for the summer season.
Evoking the glory days of the mid-century literature show parties in New York City, writer Renata Adler explained to the New York times the aesthetic pleasures that once appeared in the evenings celebrated by Jean Stein, where pompous Manhattan residents, dressed in formal style, met with the elegant bigwigs of the time, in "cowboys and swan turtleneck jerseys". Adler adds, "we didn't have a society that would have made the transition to a more informal style."
When it comes to dressing for social events, from a quiet family reunion to a stylish gala dinner, the issue becomes terribly complicated, especially if it affects middle-aged men. In Adler's time, the dress code was strict but, at the same time, it was simpler, especially for men. For a night party, a man would wear a suit with a tie. For a day event, I could wear a sport jacket and, if you felt up to it, you might not wear a tie.
Now, the world's top executives attend business meetings wearing hoodies and sneakers-"Upper Slob" style-while professionals-"lower Stiff" style-go to the parties in the same blue suits and business shirts they go to work with, with the exception of wearing a button of the unbuttoned shirt, at the neck, in a poor attempt to show a carefree attitude. But summer comes and everything gets a lot more complicated.
Knees and ankles are shown and sometimes even to the toes. At parties you can see short-sleeved T-shirts, with showy prints. Logos and slogans draw attention. The cuffs of the shirts are loosened, giving a more edgy air, or they are narrower and more revealing. Moreover, garments that should have been removed decades ago are allowed during the summer season.
The point is that if you follow a few rules and remember them, as is almost always the case with male fashion, less is more: size and fabric are the most important thing, not fashion.
Therefore, the fabrics must be light and breathable: cotton, linen and silk, or mixing them, are the right decision, better than wool or synthetic fibres. The garments should be tailor-made to fit perfectly the shape of the body: not too loose, not too narrow. In winter, it is more common to wear colors like blue or black. During the summer, the most striking colors are welcome, but they look better when they are turned off: primary colors are more suitable for children than for adults. The patterns and prints are fine, but it is better to stay in the classics: dots and stripes, pictures at most. And you shouldn't show any more skin than you need, unless you go to the pool or the beach.

These are the rules, in general, although you can be more specific. Shorts can be ridiculous, except on certain occasions, such as a barbecue with friends. But they must be tailor-made, coming right up to the knee, and it's better to combine them with a long-sleeved shirt so as not to look like a schoolboy.
Other rules are made not to break: no T-shirts or shirts with slogans over the age of 30; no baseball caps except for sports; no flip-flops unless you go to the beach; no sports sunglasses, under any circumstances.
Short-sleeved shirts are horrible, and the same can apply to wearing a pole or a long-sleeved T-shirt with cuffs resleeved up to the middle of the forearm.
Young people can wear sneakers in jeans or Chinese without looking like Jerry Seinfeld. For those over 35, tennis shoes are a safe option. But, in general, sports style-sports clothing or informal clothing-is best left out.
And finally, here is a summary of the garments to be avoided at any time: flower T-shirts make you look like James May, Clarkson's greasy sidekick. Sandals, slogans and logos. Black, unless the tan is Sicilian. Primary colors. Straps with personality. Anything with personality. Hats. Short-sleeved T-shirts. Jewelry. Sports clothing, unless any activity is practiced. Technical clothing, like hiking boots. Nothing to suggest a colder climate: thick wool or boots. Nothing too tight or loose.
In general, a very informal style, if possible, should be avoided.
